Artist Spotlight - Wednesday

Artist Spotlight - Wednesday

Using bright colours and fun expressive imagery, Wednesday illustrates wonderfully positive art.

Wednesday is a talented illustrator who focuses on queer art, positive sentiments and supportive words. We were drawn to their use of bright colours and bold figurative illustrations, as well as their focus of positive mental health awareness.

The positive narrative of Wednesday's work is truly inspiring, giving words of encouragement to fellow lgbtq+ persons. We are all about spreading positive awareness here at SGC, and Wednesday captures it perfectly!
So what did Wednesday make for us?
Wednesday designed a super cute and colourful patch, and we adore it! We especially like the cute rainbow and lil stars dotted around <3

Q&A time with Wednesday:
1. What's your favourite fictitious Ghost from popular media?

CASPER ❤ the friendliest ghost.

2. What's the best item in your pencil case?

The best I'm in my pencil case is my fluffy rainbow pen.

3. Paint? Pencil? or Tablet?

I love working traditionally, but I mostly work on my Tablet now. It's incredible that I can access so many mediums and every colour possible instantly on my iPad.

4. What's your go-to motivational album?

Currents by Tame Impala keeps me joyful while I make art.

5. How would you describe your work? Are there any common themes?

My work is my own colourful world. I use art mostly as a medium to process mental illness and identity. I love using my art to communicate to other people. I love using it to educate other people about what life can be like to live as a queer non binary person. But I mostly use my art to talk to other lgbtq+ people about loving who they are.

6. What's your proudest piece that you've worked on?

I was commissioned by Gucci to make a small comic book for their "chime for change" zine. This project was amazing to be part of, and it was genuinely lovely to see so many young leading queer writers, artists and activists get together to speak about our experiences.

7. Do you have any/many artist rituals?

Living as a freelance artist with Bipolar 2, means that my routine is something really important to me. There isnt much distinction between me and my art. We are both the same. This means when I take care of myself, I'm taking care of my art. I like to make sure that everyday, I listen to a happy song, open my curtains, eat, kiss my dog and do my skincare routine. Then I can sit down with my iPad to make some art!

In general I do lots of things to keep my art moving forward, I'll tell you about a few.

1. Research - It's really important for me to read queer texts, read philosophy and graphic novels. This helps me to keep it in mind that it is important that my art has a narrative and meaning. I believe it's really important for me to keep researching, in an effort to keep inspired and happy in my work.

2. I visit art exhibitions to see art I've always loved in real life. Being around art always makes me emotional, and every artist I see ends up affecting my process In some way.

3. Drawing to "look". This means having a sketchbook and a pen, charcoal and hard pencil with you as often as you can. Having these tools at hand means that I can see something and document it. If you keep looking and looking, you'll get better at analytical drawing. This will help you to feel more comfortable to draw anything you like! I live by this practise.

8. What motivates you?

I believe that art can be used as a tool for change. This motivates me to keep making art for myself and for queer people. I know that every piece I make will bring me closer to that truth.

9. What do you do, that you think no one else does whilst working?

I'm not entirely sure that I do anything much different than other artists. There are hundreds of thousands of us who have picked up the same habit from art school. I guess it's different that I also take part In queer activism whilst producing art. I use my platform on Instagram to create educational resources in an effort to talk to non queers about being kinder to us. I also use my art to talk to queer people about things affecting our community, and to hopefully help queers to feel less alone. I designed a t-shirt for @voices4_ recently and have raised over $1000 to help queer people flee persecution in Chechnya. There are so many ways that we can use art to act.

10. Who are you inspired by?

I'm inspired by queer people. Queer artists, writers and activists. I'm inspired by mind changers

11. What's your favourite way to practice self care? (Especially after a busy week)

A bubble bath with lavender oil and a face mask! Telling people I love them.
